“The real issue is not talent as an independent element, but talent in relationship to will, desire, and persistence.” - Milton Glaser
My name is Jonathan K. Henderson and I am a 26 year old graphic artist with a creative eye for design.
I am from Long Island, New York. As a child, my siblings and I enjoyed playing many sports. However, as high school approached, I made the decision to focus on my passion for art. In the 6th grade, I began my graphic arts journey with the first compute program, Microsoft Picture Editor, that I had on my PC. I would spend countless hours experimenting with the program. I would utilize as well as experiment with different filters, text, and brushes in order to see how many different designs I could create.
A few years later, myspace.com became very popular. Being a design enthusiast, I quickly began using code to create a large number of layouts using Paint Shop Pro and many other generators. Due to my large amount of friends and my talent, I was soon being sought out by many people to customize their myspace.com layouts. At that point, I knew that Graphic Design was right for me.
I took my first computer graphics class during my freshman year at Centerreach High School to learn the foundations of graphic design. It was here, that I was introduced to Adobe Photoshop. I learned how to use all of the tools and features of the program. This quickly became my favorite class and I would later come to excel in all assignments. As my passion for graphic arts continued to grow, I continued to work on different graphic designs, increase my skills and perfect my craft.
In 2008, I was approached by a friend of my brother’s who was interested in having me design a CD cover for him. Considering the fact that I always loved music and I always had a great appreciation for urban artwork, I accepted the offer. I instantly began researching different mixtape or CD covers and gained a lot of insight into the project. Finally, I created a design that I personally approved of; he loved it. From then on, I began creating mock CD covers to practice my new skill and to challenge my creativity.
Following my completion of High School, I went on to take college level graphic design classes at Briarcliffe College. In one of my very first design classes, I was instructed to create a logo. I decided to use a design similar to the style of a varsity jacket. My design was so simple. I merged the letters J an H together, then wrote the word designs underneath. I was honestly expecting negative feedback from my professor. However, my professor actually liked it. Most of all, my professor loved the simplicity of it. This was a real eye opener for me. I always thought of design as a complex art, but here I learned how simple design could be as an art form. This led to the official beginning of JHenderson Designs.
For the last 8 years, I have designed flyers, logos, business cards, CD covers, T-shirts, and much more for numerous clients throughout Long Island, New York City, Baltimore, California, and Florida. I have had the privilege to work with music artist such as Gunplay from Maybach Music Group, and the “Green Eyed Bandit” Eric Sermon of Def Squad. I am proud to say that Henderson Designs has grown tremendously and continues to grow everyday. More recently, I have expanded my design company into the photography industry with being a house photographer for a local Hookah lounge as well as completing photo shoots for everything from baby photos to wedding ceremonies and receptions. My dream is to become the top graphic artist in the profession and I’m always looking for ways to continue to grow.
